Edward Waters College Receives Student Support Services Grant
Jacksonville, Fla. – Edward Waters College was awarded a $238,000 grant from the Department of Education to fund Student Support Services beginning September 1, 2010.
The grant is designed to provide resources to assist low-income, first-generation college students that need developmental support to expand and hone the skills necessary to complete a four-year degree.
The funds allow for support in basic study skills and tutorial services; academic, financial, and personal counseling and mentoring; assistance in securing admission and financial aid for enrollment; career placement guidance; and special services for students with limited English proficiency.
Dr. Sabrina Edwards, director of student support services stated, "Our program at EWC will now not only assist students in gaining needed skills, but also positively affect retention and graduation rates."
The grant has been awarded for one year, but is expected to continue for five.
"I am the product of a student support services program, and living proof that SSS programs really work," Edwards said. "It is our mission and passion to lead, inspire and make a difference. This development in our program is just an example of how Edward Waters College is on the rise."
