Edward Waters College Reacts to Earthquake in Haiti Jacksonville, Fla. – Edward Waters College reacted to the earthquake in Haiti by holding a campus-wide prayer vigil on Wednesday, January 13, 2010. Dr. Claudette Williams, President of EWC said, "It was very important that we hold this vigil today to show our concern for and sensitivity to the pain and devastation inflicted on the Haitian people through this catastrophic event. We might not be there in person to support our ailing brothers and sisters; but we are there in spirit as we lift them up in prayers during this turbulent period. This event should serve as a sober reminder of just how fragile life really is and how easily our circumstances can change." Edward Waters College has several Haitian students and one staff member on its campus. The vigil was held in front of the George Collins Building. The program began with remarks from Dr. James Ewers, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. He spoke passionately about how prayer changes things and our need to be our brother's and sister's keepers. Prayers were led by Reverend Dr. D. Lovett Sconiers, Campus Chaplain, followed by a wonderful personal testimony by Frankie Jeanty, Admissions Counselor, who was born and raised in Haiti. Members of the EWC choir led the group of over 100 people in singing a song to inspire and uplift. EWC is partnering with a local agency to deliver clothing, non-perishables, and monetary gifts to Haiti. The information and receiving table is located in the George Collins Building on the College campus. Members of the community are invited to participate in this endeavor. For further information please call the Office of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at (904) 470-8211.
