Public Safety

Mission Statement

As this global society deals with various unprecedented machinations, institutions of higher learning must adapt to this ever-present phenomenon. The Edward Waters College Office of Public Safety must strive to be a bulwark in the urban community it resides. The college community encompasses students, faculty, and staff that need a safe and peaceful environment in order to learn, teach, and work for the benefit of all. In this environment the students can learn and work without fear, so that they can concentrate on their studies to take their rightful place in today's global society. The Office of Public Safety labors twenty-fours hours a day, seven days a week to ensure that the Edward Waters College campus is crime resistant, so that the college community can feel safe as they walk about the urban campus.

Edward Waters College is always concerned for your safety and security. The Edward Waters College Security Department is commissioned to assist in ensuring your safety. The Security Department wishes to let you know it provides an escort service for all students, faculty, and staff. If you wish to have someone walk with you to your dormitory room or vehicle, the Security Department will gladly escort you to your destination. Please call (904) 470-8888 from anywhere on campus for this service.

Safety Tips

  1. Don't look like a victim! Walk confidently and with a purpose, with your head up.
  2. When leaving a building, be aware of your surroundings. See who is around and where someone could be hiding. If you have any concerns at all go back in the building and call EWC Security at 470-8888 for an escort.
  3. Women: Wear your purse across your body. This makes it harder for someone to grab it from you. Men: Don't wear wallet chains. They only advertise where you keep your wallet and can be easily broken.
  4. Keep valuables (money, cell phones, laptops, etc.) out of sight.
  5. Never leave valuables unattended, even for a moment.
  6. Lock all doors as you leave your dormitory room.
  7. Always walk in groups around campus.
  8. When approaching your vehicle have your keys in your hand.
  9. Carry your EWC ID badge at all times. If possible, separate it from your purse/wallet.
  10. Register your cell phone number with the Edward Waters College Emergency Notification System. This allow us to send you a text in case of an emergency. The link is on the Home page of the EWC Web site.

In addition, take pictures of your personal belongings and record the serial numbers of your personal property. In the unlikely event that something is stolen this will aid in recovery.
