700 Alumni Flock to Edward Waters College for Reunion

700-plus Edward Waters College (EWC) alumni flocked to "Old School Weekend," an annual event created to connect EWC graduates and friends. Attendees gathered from around the country to see old friends, share memories, and celebrate great times on EWC's campus from April 17 – 19, 2009.

Organized by alumni Stanley Crowmartie, Eric Johnson, and Kerry Lofton, the weekend's events included registration and social hour on Friday; a bar-b-que, basketball game, fashion show, picnic, and music and dancing on Saturday; and brunch and church service on Sunday. Saturday's basketball game between fraternities was a fundraiser for EWC's athletic department.

Lofton, who graduated from EWC in 1988, said, "I was overwhelmed by the response we received. We've been hosting the reunion weekend for several years, and this was our largest turnout ever. I connected with classmates and friends I haven't seen for twenty years. The feedback from alumni has been phenomenal."

Johnson, another member of the Class of 1988, created ewcroundup.com, EWC alumni's social networking page. He said, "Technology is amazing. Through the 'roundup,' we were able to communicate with hundreds of alums in a single blast. I had alumni coming to me, crying and expressing how much the reunion meant. The weekend was fantastic."

Notable alumni in attendance included Jacksonville City Council member Reginald Brown, who represents District 10, and EWC National Alumni Association president Marguerite Warren. Warren added, "Our younger alumni are vital. Their work this weekend was amazing and will make the difference in garnering support for EWC."
