EWC Athletics Gives Back at Andrew Robinson Elementary
Edward Waters College’s Athletic Department took time to give back to the community Wednesday by visiting Andrew Robinson Elementary for its Celebrity Readers Day.
Men’s Head Basketball Coach Frank Burnell and Women’s Assistant Coach Steven Dennison, along with 15 student-athletes, read to more than 750 elementary students to show that reading is a critical and fun activity to embrace and enjoy.
“Students were invigorated by hearing people they look up to talk about the importance of reading,” said Pam Picray, media specialist at Andrew Robinson. “The impact that was made by the EWC staff and students will carry far into their lives.”
EWC student-athletes and coaches routinely give back to the community in numerous ways. Social responsibility, one of EWC’s core values, is one of the Athletic Department’s top priorities when off the playing field. Athletics staff and students can often be found participating in major community-focused initiatives alongside various organizations, such as Duval County Public Schools and the New Town Success Zone, throughout the year.
“The athletic department is very influential in setting the tone for how others within the EWC family approach community service,” said a college spokesperson. “They are truly making an impact, inside and outside the campus, while simultaneously enhancing the reputation of EWC’s holistic approach to education.”
