EWC Holds Fall 2012 Convocatum Est.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Edward Waters College held its Fall 2012 Convocatum Est. Ceremony Wednesday, Sept. 19, to commemorate the Class of 2016’s commitment to academic excellence.

New and transfer students were individually welcomed by the administration as they were issued the traditional “I’m on the Rise” pin and witnessed their names in the College registry. Students then recited a pledge to uphold the core values of EWC and promote academic excellence, ethics, and servant leadership throughout their four years of matriculation.

Following the pinning ceremony, keynote speaker and alumnus Eric Daniel Johnson, president of the EWC National Alumni Association, delivered an inspirational speech about overcoming obstacles and the importance of determination. He stated, “The elevator to success is out of order. You must take the stairs.”

Johnson graduated with honors from EWC in 1988 and has been a tremendous supporter of his alma mater, and youth enhancement initiatives, ever since. He currently serves as director of the After School Division for Communities in Schools of Jacksonville.  He also has partnered the alumni association with EWC’s Upward Bound Program to provide mentors to students from Raines, Ribault, Andrew Jackson and other Duval County schools to prepare them to pursue college.

Convocatum Est. is a traditional event conducted to initiate, inspire and empower new students to set high academic standards for their matriculation at EWC. It also serves as the official opening-of-school ceremony.
