Lady Tigers Make Moves in the Classroom
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Edward Waters College Lady Tigers basketball team is back on the prowl in 2013 with a new community service project. This time they are teaming up with Tiger Academy, a local YMCA Charter School. The Lady Tigers are participating in the “Y Reads” program. It encourages and teaches students to improve their reading skills. In September, the basketball players commuted once a week to Tiger Academy to mentor the second and third graders.
“It’s nice to give back, and it’s nice to be a part of something greater than yourself," said sophomore point guard, Jacqui Harries. Teammate Chelsey Ruise from Baker County said, “The kids are great. They want to learn, and they love having fun.”
“Mentoring is a primary community service goal for the EWC Women’s Basketball program, and we are thankful to Tiger Academy for allowing our team to be a part of a partnership where all parties win," said Head Coach, Charmaine Wilson. "Our community becomes stronger, and the future becomes brighter when we give back to its youth.”
