EWC Celebrates Another Night of Lights

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Edward Waters College celebrated its annual Night of Lights event Wednesday, Nov. 30, with more than 500 children from after-school programs and nearly 100 EWC students, faculty and staff.

The children, whose ages spanned from elementary to middle-school, filed into the festively-decorated Student Union Building for pictures with Santa, arts and crafts, hot chocolate and hot apple cider, cookies and to hear traditional Christmas stories told by Mrs. Claus, such as “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

As the sun went down and the clock approached 6 p.m., many of the children and volunteers anxiously waited outside, hot drinks and cookies in hand, on Centennial lawn for the 10-second countdown for the lighting of the EWC Christmas tree by President Nathaniel Glover, Santa and Mrs. Claus.  Then, with a flip of a switch, thousands of the tree’s lights illuminated the lawn and produced a warm glow onto nearby buildings, which inspired loud applause and cheers from the crowd, and commemorated the official beginning of the holidays on campus.

The event also featured songs and melodies from the renowned EWC Concert Choir, and included a presentation of a $4,000 donation to the College from Mr. Joe Caldwell and Mr. Sollie Mitchell of the United Supreme Council, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rites of Freemasonry Florida Council of Deliberation.

Thanks to all the students, staff and community volunteers who made the 2011 Night of Lights a success!.
