Dr. James B. Ewers, Jr.
Vice President for Student Affairs
& Enrollment Management

Edward Waters College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. James B. Ewers, Jr. to the position of Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. Most recently, Ewers served as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs (Chief Student Affairs Officer) and the Director of Community Partnerships at Miami University Middletown in Middletown, Ohio. He also served as a member of their faculty.   

Dr. Ewers started his career as a social studies teacher at Ballou High School in the Washington, D.C. Public School System, where he was selected as Teacher of the Year in 1974. Since then, Dr. Ewers continued to distinguish himself in higher education as well. Having served as vice president of student affairs at several institutions, Dr. Ewers is a well-regarded national speaker on the issues of admissions and retention. "We conducted a lengthy national search for a seasoned and effective leader. Dr. Ewers brings both a wealth of experience and a high level of passion to this most critical role," stated Dr. Eurmon Hervey, EWC’s Executive Vice President. 

Dr. Ewers has amassed many distinguished honors, awards, and memberships. They include Ewers having been selected as a Kellogg Fellow in 1998; special recognition from the Ohio House of Representatives for his work with youth and his commitment to diversity in 2006; election as the first African American president of the Middletown area Y.M.C.A; memberships in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, the Rotary Club, the American Red Cross, and United Way; and lifetime membership of the NAACP. Most recently, he was the 2008 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major for Peace, Justice, and Equality Award recipient presented by the Ministerial Alliance of Middletown, Ohio.   

Dr. Ewers states, "I am quite excited to be a part of Edward Waters College family and look forward with enthusiasm to working with students, faculty, and staff. As the Chief Student Affairs Officer at EWC, I am eager to begin building partnerships that will help the students at EWC become more successful."  

Dr. Ewers received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., where he was awarded a tennis scholarship. Dr. Ewers received the Master of Arts in Education from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and the Doctor of Education from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. He has also done post-doctoral work at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., where he was a 1996 graduate of the Management Development Program. Dr. Ewers' scholarly expertise has been featured in publications such as Diverse Issues in Higher Education and The Crisis Magazine.  

Dr. Ewers will begin his work on December 1.
