Jacksonville, FL – August 19, 2019 – Stay Woke: The Edward Waters College (EWC) President’s Distinguished Speaker Series will commence on September 03, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. on the EWC campus, featuring, Michael Santiago Render demonstratively well-known as Killer Mike – a nickname he received for ‘killing the microphone’ – is a Grammy award-winning rapper and actor who is making waves in the political arena for his outspoken commentary on ongoing social issues confronting America. The speaker series implemented in 2018, is a student and campus-wide academic and experiential engagement initiative intended to present a robust and varied collection of distinguished and scholarly speakers to the EWC campus community. Now in its second year, this initiative seeks to engage the views, ideas, and espoused ideals expressed by national thought leaders, authors, entertainers, activists, advocates, athletes, educators, business leaders, and opinion shapers who will be featured as a part of the series.
“The primary objective of the Stay Woke speakers series is to foster a genuine student-centered academic experience beyond the classroom,” said EWC President & CEO, Dr. A. Zachary Faison, Jr. “As a College, we are becoming the destination institution of Emerging Eminence and because of this we hold a responsibility to our students to present astounding civically engaged personages that complement the Emerging Eminence 2025 program of superlative excellence.”
The series is aptly titled ‘Stay Woke,’ as a timely colloquialism, evincing a focus upon the continuous expansion and development of the overall knowledge base of EWC’s academic community while also interfacing intentionally with culturally- based issues and promoting socially conscious and socially responsible activism in a millennial and post-millennial era.
The multifaceted Killer Mike is an award-winning American rapper, actor, social and political activist. As the founder of Grind Time Officials and a native of Atlanta, GA, Mike has a history spanning over 20 years in the Southern Hip- Hop arena. He made his debut on the song “Snappin and Trappin” from OutKast’s 2000 album; subsequently, he appeared on the Grammy-winning song “The Whole World” also by OutKast. p.m. in The Milne Auditorium on the Campus of Edward Waters College.
